Ranching in the US has been in Rex Moats family since the 1870’s in Ansley, Nebraska with his Great Great Grandfather immigrating from Czechoslovakia, buying a ranch, and naming it Morning Side Farm. Rex grew up on a family ranch in Montana that his Grandfather bought in the 1930s, and learned all about crops, cattle, chickens, bees, horses and pigs.

In 2004, he was able to buy an 8,000 acre ranch in Montana with 2.5 miles along the Missouri river and over 500 acres of wetlands. The operations included a 300+ cow-calf operation as well as over 1,000 acres of wheat, barley, and oats crops. He was the first in his region to implement rotational grazing with other improvements including new solar operated stock wells and pumps, water storage tanks, and erosion and drainage improvements.

The ranch activities changed in 2016 when Rex bought 200 acres in Shingletown, CA to raise specialty cattle, Piedmontese-Angus cross. A dream from the first Montana ranch, Rex had always wanted the tenderness and healthy meat from Piedmontese cattle and the heartiness and flavor of the Angus. Morning Ride Ranches was born.

Raising Piedmontese cattle and investing and making improvements to the land for business, habitat and nature to co-exist has always been a goal and objective, as it is for most ranchers.
