Ranching in the US has been a cherished tradition in the Rex Moats family since the 1870s in Ansley, Nebraska. His Great Great Grandfather immigrated from Czechoslovakia, purchased a ranch, and named it Morning Side Farm. Rex grew up on a family ranch in Montana, which his Grandfather acquired in the 1930s, where he gained extensive knowledge about crops, cattle, chickens, bees, horses, and pigs. In 2004, he successfully bought an expansive 8,000-acre ranch in Montana, featuring 2.5 miles along the Missouri River and over 500 acres of wetlands. This operation included a thriving 300+ cow-calf operation, alongside more than 1,000 acres dedicated to wheat, barley, and oats crops. He was a pioneer in his region, being the first to implement rotational grazing, along with various improvements like solar-operated stock wells and pumps, water storage tanks, and enhancements in erosion and drainage management.

In 2016, the ranch activities underwent a transformation when Rex purchased 200 acres in Shingletown, CA, with the intention of raising specialty cattle, specifically a Piedmontese-Angus cross. This venture was a realization of a dream that began with his first Montana ranch, as Rex had always aspired to combine the tenderness and health
In 2016, the ranch activities underwent a transformation when Rex purchased 200 acres in Shingletown, CA, with the intention of raising specialty cattle, specifically a Piedmontese-Angus cross. This venture was a realization of a dream that began with his first Montana ranch, as Rex had always aspired to combine the tenderness and health benefits of Piedmontese cattle with the heartiness and rich flavor of Angus. Thus, Morning Ride Ranches was established. Committed to the dual objectives of raising Piedmontese cattle and enhancing the land for both business and the harmonious co-existence of habitat and nature, Rex shares this vision with many fellow ranchers.

Nestled in the beautiful foothills of Lassen Peak, our Shingletown, CA ranch spans an impressive 200 acres of lush pasture, serene woods, a captivating waterfall, and meandering streams and a creek. The landscape is adorned with oaks, pines, and cedar trees, along with delightful apple and walnut trees, creating a truly pristine and picturesque location.
